What Is It To Be a Photographer?

Personally, I don’t think owning and taking pictures makes one a photographer.  I will preface my remarks by saying I am old enough now and have been in the commercial photography business long enough now to sound like an “old-timer.”  I can remember when you could actually get an appointment with creatives to show them […]

A Groom Being Groomed

I took a small gig photographing the wedding of a young couple.   They decided to forgo the crazy and expensive route of a full-blown wedding and instead get married at the Marriage Bureau, City Clerk’s Office.  This is an image of the groom being groomed.

Chinatown Pedestrian

I was walking around a bit in Chinatown yesterday morning seeing what promising light and environments were around that may yield interesting images for my “Vague Recollections” series.  I was intrigued by a white wall lit directly by the already bright morning light at 9am.  I liked the bit of graffiti that was on the […]

Young Man in Union Square

I took my camera with me as I ran out the door in a hurry last Saturday.  I decided at a spur of the moment to leave my apartment early so that I could take advantage of the sunny weather and spend time shooting in and around Union Square Park.  When I got there and […]

Times Square 1

I was in Times Square this morning seeing what the light was like.  It was beautiful.  I got there a little later than I wanted, around 8:30am.  But I still got some nice shots.  Here is one.  It was luck that I got the guy on the moped situated perfectly in the frame.

2 Women at a Bus Stop

This scene caught my eye immediately.  The simplicity of it with a minimal number of elements and a basic composition.  The green really pops but doesn’t overwhelm the photograph, I think because of the weight of the shadow.

Blonde in Blue

Very simple graphic elements make for a pretty simple composition.

Man In Blue

This is one of the most abstract shots so far.  I brightened up the spectral highlight in the top left and cropped it just a bit so that the horizontal lines were parallel to the image edges.  Otherwise I did not do much with this image – it was nearly perfect.

MoMA Lobby 2

This is one of the few images so far in the “Visual Whispers” series that I have not cropped.  This is because I typically have not been able to fully anticipate how the image will look once I have a chance to see an enlarged image closer to what it will look like as a […]

Father and Child With Taxi

Serendipity plays a lot into these soft-focus images, and I love that.  It’s exciting to get back to my computer, download the images, and then see how they’ve turned out.  It reminds me of the days of shooting film when I’d have to wait until I got the negs back to see if I got […]

Girl With Hoodie

I’m obsessed with rendering scenes out of focus.  I love how – in the absence of detail – emphasis is placed on motion, light, color, and the body language and gesture of the figures.  Because the viewer has to fill in the blanks a bit I feel like the image is more engaging as we […]

Follow the Light

Another new image from the evolving series, “Visual Whispers”    All of the images presented in the series have a minimal amount of Photoshop except for the same controls one would use in an analog image; contrast, color, value, etc.  Some images I will clone out distracting aspects of an image that I could not […]

Pedestrians at Orlando Airport

This image was shot at Orlando International Airport.  I had a couple of hours to kill so I walked around with my 5D trying to find interesting tableaus.  I found the sun enveloping a large glass vestibule where the train comes in from other terminals and thought I would catch something when people exited the […]

Fuzzy People at the Fruit Market

I am playing around with a series I am calling “Fuzzy People”. Let me know what you think, good or bad. Here is the latest image I created for it. I went down to Main St. in Flushing (Queens, New York) around 6am to see if I could get some good light and get some […]
